The Three Pyramids of Giza: Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure

Admission to the Giza Plateau is 320 EGP for adults and 160 EGP for students. Entry to the Great Pyramid requires an additional 520 EGP, while tickets to the Khafre and Menkaure pyramids cost 130 EGP each (2026 prices). These fees also grant access to the Solar Boat Museum near Khufu’s pyramid.

The entrance ticket grants access to the wide plateau, where you can walk freely between the pyramids, view the Great Sphinx, and visit the Solar Boat Museum where the ancient cedarwood boat of Khufu is preserved. The price for the Great Pyramid reflects its restricted interior access, allowing you to climb the steep corridors and visit the chambers inside.

In bright sunlight, the remaining smooth casing stones on the Great Pyramid shimmer faintly, a reminder of how it once gleamed over the desert. Vendors selling cold drinks and snacks line the entrance, their calls blending with the occasional braying of donkeys and jingling camel bells.

The fastest way to reach the Pyramids from central Cairo is by taxi or ride-sharing services, taking approximately 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. Public buses run along Al Haram Street but are slower and less comfortable, particularly in peak hours.

Starting from downtown Cairo, take Salah Salem or Ramses Street heading west, then turn onto Al Ahram Street (sometimes spelled Al Haram). As the cityscape gives way to desert, the pyramids come into view on the horizon. The route passes by the Giza Zoo and the sprawling suburbs before arriving at the entrance gate near the Solar Boat Museum.

Rideshare apps such as Uber and Careem are widely used and cost about 220 EGP from central Cairo. For a more relaxed visit, schedule your trip early in the morning to beat traffic and the midday heat.

Visitors to the Great Pyramid can walk through the ascending and descending passages, reach the Grand Gallery, and enter the King's and Queen's Chambers, witnessing the sophisticated ancient engineering firsthand. The interior is narrow and dimly lit, with a temperature noticeably cooler than outside.

The entrance to the Great Pyramid lies on its north face, about 17 meters above ground. Descending a steep tunnel, you enter the Descending Passage, which leads to the subterranean chamber, though this is often closed to visitors. The ascending passages bring you to the Grand Gallery: a long corridor about 8.6 meters high with corbelled walls narrowing as you ascend. It opens into the King's Chamber, built from massive granite blocks with a flat roof and no hieroglyphs.

The Queen’s Chamber lies below the King's Chamber but is smaller and less decorated. Photography is permitted inside, though flash and tripods are prohibited to protect the ancient surfaces. Expect echoes from footsteps and hushed voices within the confined spaces.

Entering the Khafre Pyramid reveals a smaller but architecturally significant burial chamber, with some original casing stones still visible near its apex. The interior passages are less steep than Khufu’s pyramid, and the burial chamber remains empty but impressive in scale.

Khafre’s pyramid, located southwest of Khufu’s, stands slightly shorter at 136.4 meters but retains some of its smooth limestone casing at the top, giving visitors a clearer idea of the pyramid’s original appearance. Inside, the low, narrow corridors lead to the burial chamber, which features large limestone blocks and a granite sarcophagus.

The atmosphere inside is quieter and less crowded than the Great Pyramid, allowing time for contemplation. The scent of aged stone and the cool air create a sense of stepping back through millennia. Outside, the view across the desert toward the other pyramids is striking as the late afternoon sun casts long shadows.

The best months to visit the Pyramids are from October through April when daytime temperatures range between 20°C and 28°C, making walking around comfortable. Summer months often exceed 40°C, which can be challenging for outdoor touring.

Visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon during warmer months will help avoid the strongest sun and provide softer light for photographs. Weekdays generally see fewer visitors than weekends, especially around public holidays. Spring months bring occasional dust storms, while winter mornings can be chilly with desert winds.

In cooler months, the desert air smells fresh and dry, while evenings can bring a crisp chill. The golden hour before sunset casts a warm glow on the limestone blocks, accentuating their textures and the surrounding sand dunes.
