A massive limestone statue depicting a reclining sphinx with a human head and lion's body, the Great Sphinx of Giza is carved directly from the limestone bedrock of the Mokattam Formation. Positioned on the Giza Plateau’s west bank of the Nile, it faces eastward, overseeing the surrounding desert landscape. This sculpture is the oldest monumental statue in Egypt, dating back thousands of years.
The Sphinx is integrated into the Memphite Necropolis, a significant archaeological area recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its weathered surface reveals the effects of millennia of exposure, and its imposing size and enigmatic expression reflect ancient Egyptian artistry and religious symbolism.
